MTBE is a high-octane gasoline component, its basic octane number RON: 118, MON: 100, is an excellent gasoline high-octane number additive and anti-knock agent. MTBE and gasoline can be miscible in any proportion without stratification. When blended with gasoline components, it has a good blending effect, and the blended octane value is higher than its net octane value. The relatively high oxygen content of MTBE can significantly improve vehicle exhaust emissions. However, if the added MTBE ratio is not controlled and the theoretical equivalent air-fuel ratio exceeds the adjustment range of the adaptive capability of the electronic control unit of the closed-loop control engine, it will interfere with the closed-loop control due to oxygen enrichment and make the conversion efficiency of the three-way catalytic converter decline. The study also found that MTBE will pollute the groundwater source, so California and other places have prepared to ban MTBE. Research from a Japanese research institute also showed that the content of MTBE in gasoline exceeds 7%, and nitrogen oxides in automobile emissions will increase. Therefore, in Japan’s high-grade unleaded gasoline, the amount of MTBE added does not exceed 7%.
Methyl tert-butyl ether is currently a substitute for tetraethyl lead. It is produced by isobutene and methanol in cracked carbon IV under the catalysis of macroporous sulfonic acid cation exchange resin and refined.
